Books I'm reading:
Creating Minds - Howard Garner
Dee Goong An - Robert van Gulik
The Chinese Gold Murders - Robert van Gulik
Six Sigma for Everyone - George Eckes
Six Sigma for Managers - Greg Brue
Tonight I am heading to the Grand National Rodeo with BC. Funny to think that I'm heading to the Cow Palace again for an event of such different character than the Exotic Erotic.
The soft-serve ice cream truck that stops outside my house doesn't play "Turkey in the Straw" like all the others I've ever heard. After humming along for about half a block I realized it's the chorus of "The Union Maid," The Woodie Guthrie song with the chorus "You can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union..." Funny since the poster on the side features a man in a hardhat with a soft-serve cone and a motto "Treat the whole crew!"
Thinking of revising my whole tech suite. Trying to find the right combination of phone, pda and laptop functions. Current config I'm considering
simple phone - GSL, good reception and battery life, addresss book/reminders
pda - handspring/pilot, backwards compatible with my Palm III
half-size laptop - for reading email and taking notes on the road. Occasional photo downloads
media machine at home - Mac G5 with DVD burner
It may seem silly to have so many devices, but I'm not convinced that the PDA/phone/camera solution is a good one. I feel that as a phone, the battery life is too short and it's too heavy. As a PDA it's too expensive, and as a note-taking device data entry is too hard.
I am also considering a new car, looking at the Toyota RAV4, but may be tempted to go ahead and just get the SportsMobile I've been coveting.

Writing from State College PA. I am at the Residence Inn in a hotel room bigger than my apartment. It's only $79 dollars a night. I think I am gonna move here and commute.

Earlier this week I found out I start a new 3-month consulting contract Monday 10/20. I've had the delicious pleasure of a week of liberty with the knowledge I have work soon. PR also called about a possible EP project, so I may be very busy soon.
The fall weather is lovely. Sunny and warm, but not too hot. Today I enjoyed reading the Chron outside Arizmendi and went for a walk around the inside loop of Lake Merrit with JP. Afterwards got a trim to look presentable for client meetings next week.
Yesterday hiked Mt. Tamalpais State Park with JG and LR. http://www.bahiker.com/northbayhikes/stinson.html
We hiked from the Pantoll Ranger Station to Stinson Beach and back again, following the Matt Davis, Dipsea and Steep Ravine trails, for a total of about 7.3 miles. We left the Pantoll Ranger Station at 12, and returned at 4:30. I estimate we took about an hour of breaks along the way, so the hike took us about 3.5 hours.
The Matt Davis trail winds mostly downward through dry oak forest and high CA hilltops. About half-way there's a lovely view of the ocean and Stinson Beach below. When we got to Stinson Beach,, we stopped at a restaurant for tea then headed back up the hill on the Dipsea trail. The Steep Ravine trail has lovely redwoods and a stream running down the middle. I was surprised there was so much water this late in the season.
